How to Send a Guitar by Courier

Prerequisites:

Hard case or guitar box
Large cardboard box
Cloth for wrapping guitar
Bubble wrap
Parcel tape
Guitar box or cardboard box

If you need to send a guitar by courier, there are a few steps that you need to take, in order for your instrument to arrive in perfect condition.

When sending a guitar, the first step to packaging a guitar for shipping is to loosen off the strings, as in the event of them snapping, they could damage or scratch the guitar.

When you send a guitar, ensure that you place a cloth or a layer of bubble wrap between the fret and the strings, this will reduce the risk of any abrasion from the strings.

Wrap the guitar in cloth first, this can be old T-Shirts and then wrap in bubble wrap and then place it into the hard case, this will prevent it from chaffing on the side walls of the case. Put a further layer of bubble wrap or foam under the neck to support it during transit.

Fill any voids or gaps in the case with foam packaging peanuts, or bubble wrap. This is to prevent movement whilst the guitar courier is transporting the instrument.

Put a layer of bubble wrap over the face of the guitar and the tuning keys and close the case securely. Wrap the case in bubble wrap and secure in place with parcel tape.

Find a suitable sized cardboard box to pack your guitar into, these can often be found free at a good guitar or music shop. Insert your guitar into the box and fill any voids with bubble wrap or packaging peanuts and securely seal the box shut, then attach your parcel label to the box.

Please remember that a little extra time spent on the packing, will save you the heartache of a damaged guitar. For additional information on how to pack a guitar for shipping.

Helping Feline ship their stuff

Feline Guitars have been using this small company for a number of years and always had great service and competitive pricing. We had previously used UPS directly till it got to be hard work to communicate with them. The personal attention and help that you can get in an industry that is increasingly automated and hands-off is a welcome thing to have.

Southwell Guitars Recommend…

Southwell Guitars have been using Overland Express for some years now for sending our guitars worldwide. Most major courier companies do not insure musical instruments but Overland Express have an insurance service that specialise in musical instrument insurance, giving my customers and me peace of mind. I also like that Stuart and Tim are always easy to contact if there are any questions or If I need any help. This was especially helpful after the chaos created by Brexit and the Covid pandemic. Overland Express are my first choice when I am sending guitars, something I do on a regular basis and recommend them to anyone.

Highly recommended personal service

I've been using Overland Express now for a number of years. As I send a good number of both electric and acoustic guitars every year, I wanted to find a company that offered reasonable shipping and insurance rates that guaranteed to cover guitars against loss or damage to their true value. Step forward Stuart and Overland Express. They offer top couriers and reasonable insurance costs to send guitars worldwide. In all the time I've used them I've never once had an issue. Service is quick, reliable and it is a real bonus you are able to contact someone quickly who will deal with issues should any arise. Highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you offer guitar insurance?
A. Yes we can fully insure your guitar against loss or damage in transit.

Q. What is the cost of posting a guitar UK?
A. The charges vary, depending on the carrier and whether you decide to drop it off, or have it collected. For a guitar up to 110cm, dropped off at a post office, it would be £9.65 + vat on a next working day service.

Q. Who is the best courier for guitars UK?
A. There is not a best one as such, as it comes down to personal choice. We only work with reputable carriers, as we appreciate the delicate nature of guitars and instruments. It is also worth mentioning that none of the carriers will cover damage to guitars in transit, which is why we arranged our own insurance policy.

Q. What is the safest way to ship a guitar?
A. Where possible, we would suggest sending a guitar in it's original hardcase. This may not be cost effective for cheaper guitars and would suggest a new guitar box, with sufficient packaging to protect it against damage in transit. Please try to avoid using any previously used boxes, as they offer lees protection than a new box.

Q. Are you a specialist guitar courier?
A. We ship predominantly for the music industry and have done for many years. This is why we arranged our own insurance, as this was a requirement for many musicians and something that was excluded by all the mainstream carriers.

Q. I do not have a hard case to send my guitar in, can I still use your services?
A. Yes, guitars can be shipped in a guitar box, or sturdy cardboard box, however, the packaging must be adequate to protect the guitar whilst in transit. Please read our guitar packing instructions for further information.

Q. Can I send other items with my guitar?
A. You can send other items with your guitar, such as a stand, amplifier, speakers, or accessories. Please be careful to avoid any possible damage to the guitar from items moving around inside the case.

Q. Does your insurance cover sending vintage guitars?
A. Our guitar insurance covers loss or damage during shipping of any age of guitar.

Q. I have bought a guitar on eBay, can you collect it?
A. We can collect a guitar from any address, providing it is a full street address and not a PO Box / BFPO / AFPO address.

Q. I am sending my guitar for repair, do you offer a delivery and collection service?
A. We can send your guitar for repair and return it to you once it is ready.

Q. Is insurance additional to the guitar shipping cost?
A. Once you have selected a carrier, the insurance option is on the second page. It is charged on the value of the guitar and in addition to the cost of shipping a guitar.

Q. How much does it cost to ship a guitar internationally?
A. It varies by Country and also the weight and dimensions. If you enter the details into our quote tool above, it will give you the different delivery options and costs.

Q. Is UPS good for shipping guitars?
A. All of our carriers have been carefully selected over many years of shipping guitars. We only use the most reliable carriers for guitar shipping.

Q. How do I ship my guitar internationally?
A. The process is the same as guitar delivery in the UK, the only additional requirement is Customs paperwork. This is automatically generated free of charge from the details that you enter during the booking process.

Q. Can I send a guitar via DHL?
A. Yes, DHL are one of our main carriers for shipping musical instruments.

Q. How long should a guitar sit after shipping?
A. We would advise that you allow between 12-24 hours before unpacking the guitar, to allow it to adjust to any difference in outside temperature.
